Progress Report:: Painting and installing electrical fixtures underway

Warren and I have been working diligently working around baby's naps and late into the night after she goes to sleep. The basement is close to being finished, minus the trim. We sanded the blemished spots on the posts and beams in the basement so Warren put another coat of oil on the whole thing. The walls are painted, all the lights are in, and the outlets and switches are installed. All that's missing is the pool table and a couch!

Can't wait to cozy up in front of this fireplace next winter!

Warren finished the hall ceiling after it was all painted and ready to go. We used pine because it was cheap and Warren couldn't find any half inch Doug fir tongue-and-groove. It looks great, but we are going to try and stain the pine so it clashes less with the fir.

The hall still has a plenty high ceiling but not a creepy high ceiling.

Aside from the basement, I have the master bedroom, the upstairs bathroom, the hall, and the lower balcony all touched up and painted. I am currently working on the kitchen, dining, entry, and downstairs bath. Then I will move on to the other two bedrooms. I need to find an alternative color for that highlighter yellow paint I got for the small room--I am thinking a light green but am open to suggestions. I am saving the great room for last because it is going to be tricky to get those high spots! Thankfully Warren has no fear of ladder or heights and is taller and more able to reach those areas. He loathes painting but is willing to do the spots I can't reach. :)

Up and up and up she goes!

A view from the master bedroom!

I spent a weekend testing out the acid-stain we are planning for the basement floors. I just did the utility room to start to work out the kinks (also so we don't have to work around the washer and dryer). It is a long an arduous process:

1. Scrub the floor clean and remove any oil stains, paint stains, etc. as best as possible and fill any chips/cracks in the concrete. Let dry completely.
2. Tape off walls
3. Etch concrete
4. Stain concrete. Rinse and repeat after dries if darker color desired.
5. Degreaser
6. Seal
7. Polish

What was supposed to be a gentle wheat yellow turned out more of a rusty red, but I am happy with it! It gives the floor lots of texture and character and gives it a more welcoming feel. It will be much easier to keep clean with the seal and feels great on stocking-ed feet with the smooth and glossy polish.

Wheat? More like rust. I still like it.

After I am done painting the entire house, I will either start on tiling projects or stain the rest of the basement floor. Or I will help Warren sand and oil the next level of the house. We hired a craftsman to do all the cabinetry in our kitchen, bathrooms, utility room, and entryway. It's a lot of money but we just don't have the time! We found a real craftsman though--he has an amazing portfolio, lots of great ideas, and best yet he is prioritizing our project so we can move in ASAP!
